Not a Democracy

Ok, this is one of those things that really gets under my skin now and then, so I thought I'd go ahead rant about it here.  The United States of America is not now, nor has it ever been a Democracy!  This is yet another thing that the Liberal Education Establishment has been lying to our children in school about for decades.  We are a Constitutional Republic, and quite frankly, anyone who has graduated high school and doesn't know the difference should be ashamed of themselves.  In a Constitutional Republic, the People (that would be you and I) elect the people who fill various roles in government, who then use the Constitution as a basic guide and constraining frame work, to pass laws, and govern in a fashion that is best for everyone, not just those of the majority opinion.  This helps to protect those people who may be in a minority, from those who are in the majority ....  for example, say you live someplace where the majority of people hate reptiles, but you love them and even own a couple as pets .... in a Democracy the people could vote on a law making the possession of such animals as pets a crime.  In a republic, your elected officials have to draft, debate, and then vote on a law, which the executive (president, governor, mayor, etc...) branch then has to sign, in order to ratify the law.  If this law should be found to violate some tenet of the framework used to set up the governing body (the Constitution) then the judicial branch can find that the law is unenforceable as doing so would violate rights granted to the people by the constitution.  Thus the reptile owner is at least somewhat protected from everyone else.  This is admittedly, a great over simplification of how the founding fathers designed our system of government to work, but then again, most people (myself included) do not have a degree in either government or history, but then again, an American Citizen shouldn't need a degree to understand the basic founding documents that have made us the single greatest country on planet Earth, ever!
